A nice looking sandstone bollard protecting a garage on Essex St.

On my trip to City Hall I took some pictures around the square. The newly built US Courthouse has roughly over 200 bollards surrounding the building. Here are some nice modern bollards to complement the design of the building.

I was down by City Hall and I snapped a few pics of Niagara Square. Some very cool looking bollards surround the McKinley Monument and the fountains. They look to be made out of marble with a copper covering. You have a 360 degree view of the surrounding buildings and it is quite a nice place to sit and relax.

These are the Mother of all bollards, these are big, very big. They are 5 feet high and 5 feet across at the base.  They are placed at a turn around next to Father Conway park in the Ohio basin area of the First Ward. These have to weigh a few tons a piece. These are used to weigh down buoy's in marine channels.

When I noticed this I thought it was in a very strange place. It is outside of a medical office on Maple Rd. in Amherst NY. This was all farm land so I suspect this was a hitching post or a mile marker. This was probably an old dirt road at one point so it's placement does make sense. I am glad whomever developed this land saw fit to leave it in place.

Here are some pictures I took on a little trip to Squaw Island last week.

This bollard is huge. I suspect it was part of the gate at one time.

This was also a gate bollard further out on the Island at the entrance to the Bird Island Pier.

A small marine bollard along the seawall. Someone scratched the "S" from the word swift on the sign. The current here is unbelievably fast. Many a suicide has taken place in this stretch of the Niagara River.

These two pictures are on the Black Rock Canal side of the Island. An old marine bollard and some old disused steps leading down to the canal.

Here are a couple of bollards that stop people from driving straight into a park area from the bridge crossing. A nice plaque indicating this was point in the river where former slaves could cross over to Canada.

I found this at the supermarket. A nice set of bollards protecting the cart corral.

I went over the Ferry St Bridge to Squaw Island. Here is a bollard on the Bird Island Pier. More photos to follow on this trip.

Well I found another Hitching Post. This one is on Richmond Ave. You can just make out the hole where the hardware was attached for the metal loop.

Today I have a special post. No bollards just a piece of living history. The B-17 Flying Fortress "Memphis Belle" is visiting Buffalo as part of a tour presented by an organization called Liberty Foundation. They restore old planes and get them back into flying condition. You have all seen movies of these Bombers and they look huge, but in reality I don't know where they fit the bombs, crew, guns and munitions, they are actually pretty small compared to even todays fighter. Here is the story in the Buffalo News. http://www.buffalonews.com/city/communities/west-side/article951564.ece
The P-40 did not make the trip because of some missing bolts that were on back order, I suppose you can't just go out and buy parts for an aircraft built in 1941.

These bollards are just a couple of the many that surround the flagship store of New Era Hat Company. This building was built like a fortress, because it had to be. Before it was converted to the world headquarters of New Era it was a branch of New York Federal Reserve Bank

A very cool looking bollard, this is near the Central Wharf. There is a series of these on both sides of the approach to the foot bridge that spans the Commercial Slip. The best part it they are also lights. The light source is below the ball and helps illuminate the walkway.

These bike racks are all over the city. They were designed by the Blue Buffalo Bike rental organization. This one is on Rhode Island St.

While driving down Ganson St. I noticed the Manistee lake freighter unloading sand onto the Sand Supply Co. dock along the City Ship Canal. It is a self unloading vessel and can empty it's load in about 12-14 hours. After I parked I took a picture of this bollard that is wedged between a railroad line and a truck dock. This picture doesn't do it justice showing it's size. It was over 6ft tall and looks like it was pounded into the ground with a crane sledge.

Here we have 2 brand new bollards installed as part of the new bike path along the newly reconstructed Fuhrmann Blvd. Guess who's shadow that is.

I found another hitching post. This one is on Elmwood Ave. These pop up in a lot of places since I started looking.

Just wanted to post a couple of photos of  USCGS Biscayne Bay tied up to the visiting ships dock in the Buffalo River. It is primarily a ice cutter, other missions include Search and Rescue, Maritime Law Enforcement, Port, Waterways, and Coastal Waterways Security, Public Affairs, Marine Environmental Protection, and Homeland Security.

I just noticed this bollard the other day. It is usually behind some parked cars. It is on the sidewalk in front of the Marine Drive Apartments. It is made out of rubber.

Here are two kinds of different ways of traffic control. The top photo is in the plaza behind the First Niagara Center behind the parking garage. The rocks placed here prevent cars from driving through the gate from the garage into the plaza. The second are just planters to prevent anyone from ramming the doors, more of a security measure than a traffic control device.
