It's Friday, to close out the week a great shot of The Spirit of Buffalo coming back up the Buffalo River at sunset.

Just a nice simple marine bollard today. This is located at a pier on the outer harbor near Times Beach. This bollard is bigger than it looks, it is about 3 feet high.

Here is a huge bumping post. This is in area on the edge of downtown that was a railroad corridor in the 1800's up until the 1950's. Most of the rails are long gone replaced by the NYS Thruway. This is on Seneca St. The area between Seneca and Exchange is now filled with a host of manufacturing and modern warehousing along with newly refurbished multi-use buildings.

Well I found another Hitching Post, this one is also on Porter Ave. This street always has a lot of cars parked on it so sometimes you don't spot these unless the parking spot is empty. This also appears to be made out of Medina sandstone. A lot of churches in the area are built from this material.

This is very odd looking. Five small bollards, each taller from front to back. These are along a walkway at house on Trinity Place. There are no driveways on this street so I guess these prevent someone from even thinking about parking illegally.

It's pretty hot out today today so here's a neat fountain to cool off by. This is about 20 ft high and the water comes pounding down and creates a nice splash of cool spray.

Saturday, August 25, 2012

I found these moonscape bollards on South Elmwood. It is government building so this is a security measure. They look pretty cool in the winter when it snows. Huge snowballs.

Two very cool looking bollards. These protect a house at St. Georges Gate, a private street off of Bryant St. These appear to be carved out of granite and placed in front of the brick gate.

Here is an area I visited earlier in the blog. It is Towpath Park. It follows the original route of the Erie Canal Towpath. Little did I know there was a lot more history associated with this strip of land. This is where a raiding party embarked from to invade Canada. The Fenian Raid of 1866  left here from the old Pratt Ironworks that was located along the canal. At the top we have a nice bike rack, next a marine bollard on the seawall and after that a nice set of bollards protecting the walkway. Finally a plaque telling the story of the raid. To bad the seagulls had their way with it.

Just a little off the topic of bollards but an interesting place. This is the home of the Lower Lakes Historical Museum. It is located at Franklin and Swan but it's address is 66 Erie St. It is located in a old Ship Chandlery business. They sold sails, ropes and other supplies to the shipping industry. The anchor  is in front of the building, there was no indication from where it came from.

These bollards run up Washington Street to Scott Street. They also double as lights for a very wide sidewalk.

I spotted another set of old disused fire hydrants. These are on Tennessee St.

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

Well I had this photo hanging around so here it is, another doorway bollard. This belongs to an old cold storage warehouse on Scott St.

I didn't know what to make of these two bollards. They looked like they were placed there as an afterthought. I suspect that a new driveway and sidewalk were put in and these were removed then put back. I also think they were probably from a gate. These are on North st.

These are pretty unique, the bollards are connected to the railing. These get taller as you go down the slope of East Eagle St. They protect the bays of a parking garage. I might go back and take photo of the whole street to show the slope and scale of the bollards.

The Hitching Post's keep popping up, this one is farther down West Ferry St. than the original one I posted last month. The hardware is broken and rusted out, this is made of sandstone.

I have driven past this a lot of times but never really noticed it. A really big railroad spur stopping device. In railroad terms it is called a "Bumping Post". It is on the property of Buffalo Rigidized metals on Ohio St.

Here are pair of good old functional bollards protecting a pay phone. Two rarities in this photo, a pay phone and a fire alarm box. They only put these boxes on certain high traffic corners.

I found this old concrete foundation behind a 7-11 on Niagara St. I don't know if this is a bridge foundation or an old rail spur stopping device. This is in the area of the towpath. It looks like it was destroyed during the construction of the roadway. Why didn't they just remove the whole thing.

Sunday, August 12, 2012

Here are a pair of concrete bollards at an entrance to the River Walk bike path at the foot of Hertel Ave. near what is now called Towpath Park. It is located near the original spot where the towpath was located and ran parallel to the Erie Canal which is filled in.

Millard Fillmore , 13th president of the United States of America. His Statue is outside of city hall, the plaque is at 284 Main St.

These bollards attached to the frame of the doors are pretty cool looking. This building is a well preserved former ice house. It belongs to Griffis Art Studio. This is on Essex St. near Richmond.

Thursday, August 9, 2012

I have walked by this fifty times and never noticed it. A fire alarm box with the post painted in the colors of the Buffalo Sabres of the NHL with the crest stuck to the front of it. Pretty cool.

Another cool fixture around Larkin Square. There are a row of these along the side of the Larkin U Building, I think more for security than for traffic.

Wednesday, August 8, 2012

I found this on Republic St. An old railroad car stopping device. These bumping post's are used to prevent a railcar from rolling off the end of the tracks. There is no track laid here and it is close to an old warehouse. I suppose it was just a spur that serviced the building and was removed, if you look close you can see the old loading dock. There are active tracks across the street from here.

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

Hey I found another old hydrant this weekend. This is in front of an old machine shop on Niagara St. It looks like the guys from this shop paint it once in a while.

No bollards today today just a boat. This is the American Mariner an almost 800ft long lake freighter. Here it is self unloading grain to the Frontier Elevators at General Mills on the City Ship Canal.

Monday, August 6, 2012

These concrete bollards are placed in front of where ever there is a propane storage cage. This one is at a gas station on Delaware Ave. There is also a green painted bollard next to the building. I guess somewhere along the line someone drove into a cage and it exploded so I would think these are good idea.

Sunday, August 5, 2012

This is a bit odd, somehow the matching bollard went missing. I suspect it was hit by a vehicle and was never replaced. This is at the foot of West Ferry, on a downward slope at the approach to the lift bridge. It can get pretty slippery in the winter on an all brick street.

You would never know there was a Navy yard here. This Plaque is under a highway overpass and you really don't have much access to the water from this area.
