A very appropriate color for this bollard, it is at the entrance to a fire extinguisher company. This is on Grote Street.

I probably walked past this great looking marine bollard many times but it was hidden by an events tent or the picnic bench. This is on the Central Wharf.

Thursday, December 27, 2012

How about a couple of huge indoor bollards today, these are in a parking garage and protect the incoming traffic from a turning lane. These are about 4 feet high and have steel loop on top for easy moving by a high lift. There are also some standard pipe bollards on the island behind them that protect the ticket and arm apparatus. This is the Adams Ramp on Washington St.

I am just going to title this The Lions Of Lincoln, These are very prominent features at a couple of very large properties on Lincoln Parkway

Saturday, December 22, 2012

With the onset of winter it is just about time for the New York Power Authority to begin installing the boom across the mouth of the Niagara River in Lake Erie. This prevents the ice from going down river and creating a jam at the water intakes for the Power Project. The boom is stored on property by the Buffalo River, the tugs pull the boom sections down river and connect them together in the lake.

These are really not bollards in the true sense but they do function as good looking lights along a pathway at Roswell Park on Virginia St.

Monday, December 17, 2012

This combination bollard/light is in a nice little pocket park on Swan and Pearl Streets.

Saturday, December 15, 2012

Another nice find, an old disused hydrant. This is on Roseville St. off of Larkin St. outside of an Alp Steel warehouse.

Thursday, December 13, 2012

These simple and functional bollard/lights are at the entrance to a theatre on Washington St. St. Michaels Place t-bones right into the entrance so the doors needed a little protection.

Monday, December 10, 2012

A very neat looking cone shaped door bollard on a building on Illinois St. There are some good looking older buildings in this part of the waterfront.

Sunday, December 9, 2012

Here are some very nice looking bollards. A nice ball on top of an ornate post. These are smaller than most bollards but still a nice size for the location. These are on North St.

Here is a very nice upping stone I found on Prospect Ave. It looks to be carved out of granite. I suspect it was moved here because it is placed on the front lawn by the sidewalk. If it was original it more than likely would have been near the street for passengers disembarking from their carriages.

Here is a set of nice corner bollards protecting a gate on Cleveland Ave. The wall was once part of the John J. Albright estate

Saturday, December 1, 2012

Who says bollards should be black or yellow, this stands out pretty good. It is protecting a hydrant at the entrance to a warehouse. This is on Elmwood Ave.

Thursday, November 29, 2012

I took this yesterday afternoon at the Erie Basin, A calm late November sunset over Lake Erie, you don't get many of these at this time of the year.

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

Because there are cars parked here all the time I missed this Upping Stone. I spotted this on a Saturday when the business was closed. It is quite a nice looking stone and looks like it might have been moved here. This is on Franklin St just north of Virginia.

On my travels through the Westside I stumbled on this very impressive hitching post. The sides are rough with a nicely carved round top, It is made of sandstone with the hardware still attached. This is on St. Johns Place.

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

Just a quick post before Thanksgiving. Here are bollards that protect the entrance and support pillars inside the underground parking street of Mayfair Lane. This was built by one of Buffalo's most well known architects. EB Green designed the property and lived here. This is off of North St.

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

A nice looking corner door bollard, this is on Arsenal Place off of Michigan Ave. It looks like this was installed as an afterthought because of the reuse of the building.

Sunday, November 18, 2012

This bollard on Sweeney Street is removable for when they need to let cars through. They have concerts here in the summer so it is closed off after 4pm. This runs along the Erie Canal.

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

This slightly out of whack corner bollard belongs to part of the wall that surrounds Old County Hall on Franklin Street. The side walks have just been replaced so I think the bollard might have been knocked off it's base. There is some hardware on top so I also suspect these were also used for hitching posts.

Monday, November 12, 2012

Two very simple bollards protecting a fence on Irving Place. These are large steel pipes with concrete poured into them to make sure if you hit them they won't budge.

Happy Veterans Day

This statue is dedicated to the Army, Navy, and Marines for service in the war with Spain, the Philippine Insurrection, and the China Relief Expedition. The statue is called The Hiker and was unveiled at a military parade held in Buffalo to honor the soldiers of the Spanish-American War. Happy Veterans Day to all who have served. It is made of Bronze and has a granite base, dedicated 5/29/1920

Friday, November 9, 2012

This is almost an exact replica of a bollard I posted about earlier on Bidwell Pkwy. This is from 1938, the other post was from 1950 so I guess the other post was a replica of this one. Well anyway both were on corners set back so I am guessing they are property line posts and not bollards in a true sense. This is on the corner of Lexington and Richmond.

Who hasn't seen these yet? A cool bollard outside of the Target Store on Delaware. The store In Amherst had quite a few of these. I don't go shopping much at these stores but it was a worthwhile trip just to snap a photo.

Monday, November 5, 2012

Here is another old fire hydrant I spotted further down on Niagara Street. It seems for some reason these old buildings that faced the Erie Canal still have these hydrants in place with the newer hydrants installed along the curb at the street.

Saturday, November 3, 2012

I thought I would feature another gate today. This one is a very modern gate that was built a few years ago. Very ornate wrought iron and some recessed lighting under the canopy. This is on Rumsey Road.

Thursday, November 1, 2012

Here are a lot of bollards. These protect the the Blue Cross building on Fourth St. They are a pretty simple design with slots for the lighting to come through for the side walks around the building.

Monday, October 29, 2012

Just a look back at a much more calm day. This is the China Lighthouse at the entrance to the Buffalo River.

Friday, October 26, 2012

These very modern door bollards belong to the entrance at Rotary Rink. This is where you can sit and change into your skates or buy a hot chocolate after skating. In the summer it is cool reflecting pond and in the winter a very nice place to skate the day away

Thursday, October 25, 2012

Here is a very nice marine bollard that stands out with the yellow paint job. This is along the Erie Canal. The white bollard above it is a combination tie up and power source for docking boats.

Sunday, October 21, 2012

I just wanted to highlight the USS Little Rock that is a staple at the Naval and Military Park on the Buffalo River. Two very large marine bollards keep the ship anchored. The port anchor is on display at the park.

Friday, October 19, 2012

Here is a nice set of bollards protecting some widows along Washington St at Roswell Park. Notice how they had to cut one shorter than the others so the fire standpipe could be accessed.

Thursday, October 18, 2012

In some future posts I will be featuring the many gates that were built to protect large homes or are simply ornamental in nature.

This gate is will be very familiar to those of you that live in the area. It is on Franklin and Edward St's. The large gargoyle's that are placed on the top of gate posts are pretty cool.
