A nice looking sandstone bollard protecting a garage on Essex St.
Welcome to my Bollards of Buffalo Blog. Bollards come in many shapes and sizes and are used in many different locations to control the flow of traffic, protect buildings and other structures, they are also used in harbors to tie up marine vessels. I will be posting on a regular basis but not every day. I will be searching out all areas of Buffalo in the coming days. I will also post photos that are not Bollards but will be historic or interesting. I hope you will enjoy the Blog.

I was down by City Hall and I snapped a few pics of Niagara Square. Some very cool looking bollards surround the McKinley Monument and the fountains. They look to be made out of marble with a copper covering. You have a 360 degree view of the surrounding buildings and it is quite a nice place to sit and relax.

These are the Mother of all bollards, these are big, very big. They are 5 feet high and 5 feet across at the base. They are placed at a turn around next to Father Conway park in the Ohio basin area of the First Ward. These have to weigh a few tons a piece. These are used to weigh down buoy's in marine channels.

When I noticed this I thought it was in a very strange place. It is outside of a medical office on Maple Rd. in Amherst NY. This was all farm land so I suspect this was a hitching post or a mile marker. This was probably an old dirt road at one point so it's placement does make sense. I am glad whomever developed this land saw fit to leave it in place.

Here are some pictures I took on a little trip to Squaw Island last week.
This bollard is huge. I suspect it was part of the gate at one time.
This was also a gate bollard further out on the Island at the entrance to the Bird Island Pier.
A small marine bollard along the seawall. Someone scratched the "S" from the word swift on the sign. The current here is unbelievably fast. Many a suicide has taken place in this stretch of the Niagara River.
These two pictures are on the Black Rock Canal side of the Island. An old marine bollard and some old disused steps leading down to the canal.
Here are a couple of bollards that stop people from driving straight into a park area from the bridge crossing. A nice plaque indicating this was point in the river where former slaves could cross over to Canada.

Today I have a special post. No bollards just a piece of living history. The B-17 Flying Fortress "Memphis Belle" is visiting Buffalo as part of a tour presented by an organization called Liberty Foundation. They restore old planes and get them back into flying condition. You have all seen movies of these Bombers and they look huge, but in reality I don't know where they fit the bombs, crew, guns and munitions, they are actually pretty small compared to even todays fighter. Here is the story in the Buffalo News. http://www.buffalonews.com/city/communities/west-side/article951564.ece
The P-40 did not make the trip because of some missing bolts that were on back order, I suppose you can't just go out and buy parts for an aircraft built in 1941.

While driving down Ganson St. I noticed the Manistee lake freighter unloading sand onto the Sand Supply Co. dock along the City Ship Canal. It is a self unloading vessel and can empty it's load in about 12-14 hours. After I parked I took a picture of this bollard that is wedged between a railroad line and a truck dock. This picture doesn't do it justice showing it's size. It was over 6ft tall and looks like it was pounded into the ground with a crane sledge.

Just wanted to post a couple of photos of USCGS Biscayne Bay tied up to the visiting ships dock in the Buffalo River. It is primarily a ice cutter, other missions include Search and Rescue, Maritime Law Enforcement, Port, Waterways, and Coastal Waterways Security, Public Affairs, Marine Environmental Protection, and Homeland Security.

Here are two kinds of different ways of traffic control. The top photo is in the plaza behind the First Niagara Center behind the parking garage. The rocks placed here prevent cars from driving through the gate from the garage into the plaza. The second are just planters to prevent anyone from ramming the doors, more of a security measure than a traffic control device.
